Mineral Wells Independent School District met this week in a regular session and discussed a hot topic buzzing school campuses across the state.

Superintendent John Kuhn decided to put the subject on the agenda after a few smaller schools in the county voted to switch to a four-day school week. Perrin and Graford ISD will shorten their week for the 2022-2023 school year. Kuhn says the district has already lost five teachers this spring to districts with shorter weeks and felt a need to open the discussion.

“We presented info on schools that have gone to the four-day week and the pros and cons, as well as results of a staff survey and results of a survey a third party put out on facebook,” said Kuhn.

The board listened to the report and took no action.

“Our marching orders are to research academic and attendance results before and after implementation at schools that have done it last year or year before and also to gather feedback regarding satisfaction among students, parents, and staff in those schools, as well as to poll our own students and ISD parents, then report back for a possible up or down vote. That could happen at our June meeting or could be accelerated to a special meeting so parents and teachers will know which we we are going sooner rather than later,” he stated.

The district is currently polling parents for their input and MWAN will share the results soon. Parents are encouraged to fill out the survey sent to their email accounts.

Kuhn says that an overwhelming 87% of MWISD staff polled last week were in favor of a shorter week.
