GRAHAM – A shorthanded Mineral Wells Lady team picked up its first district win Friday, prevailing 22-19 over Graham in a game where points were hard to come by for both teams.
Sophomore guard Jaylee Newman led the effort with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor while sinking two of her three free throw attempts. Newman also recorded one assist and three steals.
Just seven Lady Rams contributed as the team continues to fight the illness bug. The win was the team’s second straight.
Another sophomore, post Emery Boswell, had four points and seven rebounds to go with one steal.
Senior Cadence Colwell made three of her four points on the team’s lone made deep ball. Kahlea Samples scored two points, with one point each from Aniya Richardson and Rindy Carter.
As a team the Lady Rams made just seven of 20 shots inside the arc and one of their six deep ball attempts. They were 5-of-11 from the charity stripe. Mineral Wells recorded nine swipes and 14 rebounds.
The win lifted the Lady Rams’ record to 17-12 on the season and 1-3 in District 6-4A. Hopes are a healthier squad will be available when the team travels Tuesday to Stephenville (17-9, 2-1) for tipoff scheduled at 5:45 p.m.
