Because when we work together, we truly are stronger

As most of you know I play many roles within my community and my state, both partisan and non-partisan.
I am the elected Democratic Chair of Palo Pinto County as well as the co-founder of a political action committee that supports Rural Texans.
I have traveled all over Texas visiting every county speaking with and speaking to, listening to, observing and helping everyday people just like me and you.
Yesterday I spent 15 hours volunteering at the Mineral Wells Municipal Election in Mineral Wells.
Having lived here my entire life I was able to see and visit with so many of my neighbors, friends, previous coworkers, family members, community members, and hardworking everyday people that love our community.
But unfortunately I also observed a relatively small group of people who take up the most space, who are the loudest, who are the most obnoxious, their only intention is to create chaos and bully people.
I have learned how to deal with these people, I absolutely do not let them trigger me, I look at it in this way…
They’re playing checkers and I’m playing chess…I am in this for the long game.
My ego doesn’t care if those people get the last word in any type of verbal conversation… I can just look at them smile and walk away. I know its hard because the words they said to me yesterday were really hateful.
One comment that was repeated many times was “why dont you share your videos with the porn channel” These guys are just creepers and bullies…
But what we all have to understand is that they are saying this because they know how horrid it sounds and they want a reaction from me…
I will never give them the satisfaction of having a conversation with me, especially one that will never work to benefit me!
Because when I walk away, I have a plan.
I know what my next three moves are and I promise you…it is a plan to make sure that they don’t win…
AND YESTERDAY…THEY LOST BIG TIME!
Yesterday, I saw both kindness and cruelty, compassion and indifference, and yesterday the kindness and compassion along with hard work and partnerships across party lines prevailed.
I hope that the lessons learned yesterday are not tossed aside but taken and cultivated so that we can continue to work together for the betterment of our community…Because when we work together, we truly are stronger, yesterday was the prime example of that.
So I call upon all of my community members, my friends, our city council members, both party leaders and members to continue to work together to make our homes a place where these bullies cannot take over.
Thank you,
Carla Schoonover Porter Palo Pinto County Democratic Party Chairwoman
