Lady Rams remain winless in district

By DAVID MAY | Special to Mineral Wells Area News

It was a 22-point turnaround Tuesday for the Mineral Wells Rams, overcoming an 11-point deficit to win by 11 at Brownwood.

The 62-51 win was the Rams’ first in District 6-4A with one game against Brock remaining in the first round of district play. The win snapped a five-game losing streak and upped the Rams’ season record to 5-21 overall, 1-3 in district.

Brownwood fell to 13-14 and 0-4 with the loss.

Friday’s game at Brock has a scheduled 7 p.m. tipoff. The Eagles are currently ranked No. 21 in Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches with a record of 20-8 and 4-0. Sitting atop the district standings, Brock is coming off a 71-30 win Tuesday at Stephenville to post their fourth consecutive victory.

LADY RAMS

Despite a sluggish first half offensively, the Lady Rams kept Tuesday’s district battle in Brownwood close into the third quarter, trailing by four points, 21-17.

But the Lady Lions took control from that point, outscoring Mineral Wells 36-8 the rest of the way to claim a 57-25 win.

Jaylee Newman scored 10 of the Lady Rams points with a 5-for-9 shooting effort from the floor. Addyson Moore provided 7 points, with Kahlea Samples dropping 6 points and Aniya Richardson adding 2 points.

The Lady Rams made 10 of 40 shots. They attempted just six free throws on the night, making four. Nineteen turnovers did not aid their efforts.

The game marked the beginning of District 6-4A’s second round of games. Mineral Wells dropped to 15-13 on the year and 0-6 in district action.

It doesn’t get easier Friday as Mineral Wells will make the short bus ride to Brock to face the 10th-ranked Lady Eagles in a scheduled 5:30 p.m. contest. Brock is 19-8 overall and 4-2 in district after being edged Tuesday by Stephenville, 39-38. That moved the Honey Bees into a second-place tie with Brock. Glen Rose, ranked third in the state, continues to dominate.

Mineral Wells has games remaining against all three teams and Graham.
