Mineral Wells drops district opener to No. 2 Brock

The Brock softball team arrived in Mineral Wells on Tuesday undefeated, and left undefeated.

The Lady Rams gave the No. 2-ranked Lady Eagles (16-0-2) all they wanted through six innings before Brock put the game away with a four-run seventh to claim an 8-3 win in the District 6-4A opener at Kessler Field.

Five errors hurt Mineral Wells’ cause as four of Brock’s eight runs were unearned.

Angy Bista had the Lady Rams’ lone RBI while Kynlee Harkins collected two of the team’s five hits.

A pair of errors allowed Brock to score twice in the top of the first inning. The Lady Eagles plated two more runs in the third to go up 4-0.

The Lady Rams fought back in the bottom of the fourth. Harkins led off with an infield single. She moved to second on a passed ball. She then came around to score on a hit by Hailey McWhorter and an error by Brock’s center fielder.

Tatum McMinn had the third consecutive hit to start the inning, moving McWhorter to third with the help of a stolen base. Emery Boswell loaded the bases on a bunt single with one out. Bista drew an RBI walk, scoring McWhorter to make it 4-2.

Pinch-runner Brogsia Burks scampered home on an errant pick-off attempt at first base, moving Boswell and Bista into scoring position. Karli Aaron’s hit to second resulted in Boswell called out at home. A fielder’s choice ended the Lady Rams’ three-run rally.

Brock scored four times in the top of the seventh and set the Lady Rams down in order in the bottom of the frame to end the contest.

McWhorter started and went the distance for Mineral Wells in the circle. She allowed seven hits and eight runs (four earned) over seven innings, striking out three and walking five.

District play continues Friday when Brownwood comes to town Friday for a slated 5 p.m. first pitch.
