Senior Holden Hering recorded 15 strikeouts and doubled home a run in Mineral Wells’ 2-1 victory over Stephenville on Tuesday at Pratt Field.
Hering allowed just four hits and one run while walking one over his 6.1-inning effort. His dominating outing follows the one he turned in last week against Glen Rose when the Texas Tech-commit and pro baseball prospect fanned 13 hitters.
Like last week, William Hollifield came on in relief to secure the win. Against the Yellow Jackets on Tuesday, Hollifield picked up the last two outs for the save, notching one strikeout.
Mineral Wells (11-7-1) improved to 3-0 and sit atop the District 6-4A standings.
It was a pitchers’ duel for the first five innings as neither team could solve the opposing pitcher. The Rams broke through with both of their runs in the home half of the sixth.
Josh Petrie led off with a walk and scored on Hering’s double into left. Hering stole third and touched home on Kord Henry’s sacrifice fly to right.
The Yellow Jackets got a leadoff single to start the seventh inning. Hering recorded his final strikeout of the game before a passed ball allowed the Stephenville runner to advance to second. A single plated the run, and Hollifield was summoned to the hill.
A hard single up the middle was turned into the second out as the runner tried advancing to second on a wild play. The final out came on a dropped third strike, with catcher Curry Crouch throwing down to first to end the game. Petrie, Crouch and Hering had one hit apiece.
Weather permitting, Mineral Wells travels to Stephenville for a scheduled 7 p.m. game Friday.
