PALO PINTO, Texas — The Palo Pinto County Historical Commission will host its biennial “Palo Pinto County on Tour” event on Saturday, April 26, showcasing the region’s historic landmarks while highlighting the dedicated volunteers who make the event possible.
The self-paced driving tour, running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., allows participants to visit six historic sites across the county at their own convenience. The event has become a regional attraction, drawing hundreds of visitors and earning recognition from neighboring counties.
“This phenomenal organization works tirelessly to spotlight the rich, unique and diverse history of Palo Pinto County,” according to a statement from the Strawn Area Chamber of Commerce, which recognized the extensive planning and organizing required to produce the event.
Current Historical Commission members from Strawn include Pam McQueary, Diana Hinkson, and Carl Frazier, alongside Strawn alumni Sandra Crawford from Mineral Wells and Rob Smith from Palo Pinto. Past board members from Strawn have included Don Crawford and Pauline Mitchell.
Sites featured on this year’s tour include Castle Rock in Santo, the Old Jail Museum Complex and First Christian Church in Palo Pinto, St. Boniface Catholic Church at Dodson Prairie, and both Zim’s Retreat & Recreation and the Watson House in Strawn.
Tickets are priced at $20 for adults, $5 for children ages 6 to 15, and free for children under 6. They can be purchased on the day of the tour at any site location, or in advance at the Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce (940-325-2557) and Bennett’s Office Supply in Mineral Wells (940-325-1344).
The event is made possible through sponsorships from various local businesses, including Strawn-area entities such as McCoy Structures, Clear Fork Bank, Strawn Greyhound Pac-A-Sac, Zim’s Retreat & Recreation, Strawn Area Chamber of Commerce, and Robinson Ranch.
