The Mineral Wells Police department utilized social media this week to help detectives solve an interesting case of a unique missing item.

The following post was made to the MWPD’s Facebook page:

This week patrol officers recovered an urn containing ashes that had been found left in a public place. The urn is very distinctive and the owner would be able to describe it to our property clerk. We would like to see this item returned so it doesn’t have to just be kept in our property for safekeeping. If you or someone you know is trying to locate this missing item contact us at 940-328-7770 and ask to speak to criminal investigations division/property clerk.

Police Chief Dean Sullivan said the rightful owner was quickly identified with the help of the business where the urn was allegedly found.

“Working with the storage unit business where the property was found, investigators were able to identify the probable owner. That owner resides out of state and investigators are attempting to track that person down to return the property. As far as how that urn, which contains cremated human remains, ended up in the parking lot is still under investigation,” he said.

Investigators hope to learn more once the owner is contacted and reunited with the property.
