School District Releases Statement on Failed Procedure that Enabled a Known “Offender” on School Campus; No Children Were in Contact
Press Release from MWISD Concerning Policy Breach at Travis Elementary
We recently conducted a review of our internal processes at Travis Elementary and identified a procedural oversight that we deeply regret and want to address with transparency.
During this review, we discovered that we failed to complete a background check for a specific parent as required by our own guidelines. We sincerely apologize for any concern this may have caused. Registered offenders are not allowed on campus without escort or specific written permissions and conditions. We utilize technology to scan IDs at all campuses to ensure offenders are identified. Please be assured that the safety and security of our students remain our top priority.
It’s important to note that the parent in question escorted their child to a classroom and had no contact with other students before leaving the campus.
In response to this oversight, we have taken the following actions:
1. We have completed the required background check for the involved parent.
2. Our protocols and procedures have been thoroughly reviewed to ensure compliance with our guidelines.
3. Appropriate measures have been implemented to prevent similar oversights in the future.
