Mineral Wells still looking for first district win

By DAVID MAY | Special to Mineral Wells Area News

The Mineral Wells Lady Rams are looking up at their five District 6-4A opponents after failing to collect a win in the first round of district contests.

Mineral Wells has suffered five straight defeats, all district games, after Friday’s 40-30 road loss to Graham Lady Blues, a battle for the district’s bottom two spots in a six-team district where the top four advance to post season.

The Lady Rams (15-12, 0-5) will have their work cut our for them in the second half of district play if they are to make it to the playoffs.

On Friday night in Graham, Mineral Wells got off to a strong start, finishing the first quarter with a 10-4 lead. Mineral Wells played a strong third period, too, but their outputs in the second and fourth quarters did them in, scoring 5 and 3 points, respectively, while Graham (11-16, 1-4) put up 23 points combined in the two deciding frames.

The first half of the district round robin finished as expected, with the two teams ranked in the Top 10 sitting atop the standings, led by No. 3 Glen Rose (27-2, 5-0) and followed by No. 8 Brock (19-7, 4-1). They are followed by in the standings by Stephenville (14-14, 3-2) and Brownwood (20-9, 3-2), Graham and Mineral Wells.

Against Graham, senior Lady Rams guard Kahlea Samples produced half of the team’s scoring, tallying 15 points with two made three-pointers, four field goals and a made free throw. Aniya Richardson scored seven points with Jaylee Newman and Addyson Moore providing three points each. Emery Boswell chipped in a field goal.

The Lady Rams made just 10 of 47 shots from the floor (21%). They made six of 24 attempts inside the arc and went 4-of-23 beyond it. Mineral Wells made 6-of-12 free throws.

Tuesday night saw Mineral Wells drop a 46-33 home affair to the visiting Stephenville Honey Bees. Two Lady Rams scored in double figures with Moore totaling 11 points and Newman adding 10. Richardson provided six points with Maci Ruelas and Boswell finishing with three points each.

Mineral Wells committed 21 turnovers which hampered their effort.

Two road games this coming week will kick off the second round of district games with the Lady Rams in Brownwood on Tuesday and at Brock on Friday.
