The Mineral Wells City Council approved multiple development projects and heard presentations on city code updates during its February 18th meeting.

New Homes Planned…

Mike Tincher received approval for a preliminary plat of an 18-home subdivision on Southeast 25th Avenue, just south of Hilley Drive.

Valley View Developers presented plans for homes ranging from 1800 to 2000 square feet with a contemporary style and stucco exteriors.

The project previously received approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission.

The council also approved the final plat for Phase One of The Wells development, a 40.446-acre project that has seen modifications due to recent economic conditions as well as a change in the developer.

The project engineer says the developer is eager to get started.

“We’ve selected a contractor and we’ve got a preconstruction meeting next week and we’re looking to break ground in March,” said Remington Wheat of Bannister Engineering.

Protecting the Trees…

The council updated an ordinance that will now require any contractors who are working in the city to address tree preservation while completing their services.

City Manager Jason Weeks said the new ordinance will dictate that when a utility contractor has to clean up or trim trees in the right-of-way, they must do so in a manner that will not damage the life of the tree.

Mayor Regan Wallace brought the measure forward after citizens raised concerns about tree trimming along Northwest 4th Avenue that were “butchered.”

Unified Codes to Modernize City Standards…

Marya Morris of Kendig Keast Collaborative presented plans for updating the city’s unified development code.

Ultimately Morris said her organization will incorporate the city’s newly adopted comprehensive plan to help leaders create and develop new zoning regulations.

The new unified codes will likely encompass subdivision standards, sign regulations, street standards and other measures important for modernizing the city’s codes for development.

“We have a number of opportunities in this process for the community of Mineral Wells to provide input,” Morris said, describing the sixteen month project that will help modernize city ordinances for future development.

The process will includes focus groups, stakeholder meetings and an April design exercise with project managers focusing on potential redevelopment sites in the community.

City Council Candidates…

The application process to file to run for a seat on city council closed on Friday 2/14 and the “write-in” process closed on Tuesday 2/18 and the city reports the following have applied to run for the available seats. The election will be held May 3rd. Candidates are:

Place 1

Kyle Kelley will re-run.

Place 2

Glen Mitchell will re-run.

Ward 2

Charles Ramsey will run unopposed as Carlos Maldonado said he would not re-run for the position.

Ward 4

Mike Rankin will run unopposed for the seat and will replace the vacant seat of recalled Councilman Doyle Light.
