City crews and contractors collaborate on critical water infrastructure maintenance

City workers and outside contractors began the installation of a newly rebuilt raw water pump at the Brazos Pump Station, part of an ongoing maintenance program essential to maintaining uninterrupted water service.

These massive raw water pumps, which require complete rebuilding approximately every three years, are installed in sections due to their exceptional length. The rebuilding process itself takes six months to complete.

“This is just one of many collaborative projects between the City and District to ensure continuous water flow to our residents,” said a District official.

The operation requires coordinated efforts from multiple departments including mechanics, electrical specialists, and operations personnel, alongside external resources such as trucking companies, specialized contractors, and crane operators.

The complex installation followed a coordination meeting held April 1, where team members reviewed a comprehensive checklist developed to streamline the process. These procedural improvements have significantly reduced installation time while enhancing worker safety.

Behind the scenes, City operators took advantage of the scheduled downtime to perform critical preventive maintenance and backwashing of the pipeline infrastructure.

The contractor responsible for rebuilding the pumps maintains a specialized team of millwrights on-site during installation to ensure proper assembly and balanced operation upon startup.
