Lady Rams open hoops season with win

Led by Kahlea Samples’ 12 points, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams got their 2023-24 basketball season off to a great start with a dominating road win Tuesday over the Venus Lady Bulldogs, 48-12.
The Class 4A-1 Lady Rams held Venus, 4A-2, to just two points in the opening period then three in the second on their way to a 25-5 halftime lead. The defense kept the pressure on in the second half, limiting the Lady Bulldogs to five third-quarter points and two in the fourth.



Samples, a 5-foot-7 junior, hit 6 of 11 shots from the field for a 55% field goal average. She also led the team with eight of the Lady Rams’ 21 steals.
Senior Cadence Colwell added 9 points, including a three-pointer, to go with four assists and five steals.
Freshman Aniya Richardson chipped in 7 points and three assists for the Lady Rams. Sophomore Rindy Carter scored 6 points, followed by 5 points apiece by senior Caitlyn Colwell and sophomore Jaylee Newman. Sophomore Addyson Moore had 2 points and junior Hailey McWhorter made the score chart with 1 point.



The Lady Rams shot 20-of-45 from the floor for a 47 percent shooting percentage. From the charity striped the ladies were 6-of-17 for 35 percent.
Mineral Wells cleaned up 29 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards. They also stayed free of foul trouble, with no Lady Ram receiving more than two fouls and the team being whistled just nine times.
The Lady Rams (1-0) have a home matinee on Saturday as they welcome Grapevine Faith Christian to the MWHS gym. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
