The Mineral Wells Rams opened their 2023-24 basketball season, while the Lady Rams played their home opener over the weekend. Both teams ended up on the losing ends of their games.

LADY RAMS

After winning their season opener last week, the Class 4A Lady Rams welcomed TAAPS-5A member Grapevine Faith Christian to MWHS gym for a Saturday matinee affair. The Lions (1-0) got the best of the Lady Rams, leaving with a 47-19 win.

The Lady Rams (1-1) were unable to generate much offense or flow against the Lions, scoring just three points in the opening quarter and six in the second to trail 29-9 at the break. Mineral Wells outscored GFCHS 10-8 in the third quarter, but were then shut out in the final period.

Junior Kahlea Samples led MWHS with five points, making two field goals out of eight attempts. Hitting one field goal each were Jaylee Newman, Aniya Richardson, Rindy Carter, Emery Boswell and Caitlyn Colwell.

The Lady Rams took just eight free throw shots, making four of them. 

Boswell, a sophomore, cleaned six rebounds off the glass, three defensive and three offensive boards, as MW had 21 rebounds for the game. Boswell also recorded the team’s lone blocked shot.

Turnovers were very costly for the Lady Rams, committing 28 on the afternoon.

The Lady Rams will play Tuesday at 6:15 p.m. at Godley, which is off to a 2-0 start on the young season with wins over Joshua and Cooper.

RUNNING RAMS

The Rams opened their season on the road, visiting the Class 3A Life Oak Cliff Lions, losing 63-32.

Mineral Wells hits the road for their second non-district game Tuesday at Springtown, which will be playing its season opener.
