The Mineral Wells Lady Rams led Iowa Park until the final seconds before dropping a hard-fought 31-29 game Friday on the road.

Junior shooting guard Kahlea Samples scored 10 points on five-of-six shooting from the floor. Samples also collected six rebounds, including four offensive boards, and tallied five steals.

Cadence Colwell, a senior guard, also filled up the stat sheet with seven points, including one of the team’s two three-pointers made. The Lady Rams point guard had two rebounds, two assists and four steals.

After poor offensive showings in their last two outings, Mineral Wells (1-3) got off to a hot start at Iowa Park, taking a 15-6 lead after the first period. The Lady Rams held a 21-12 advantage at the break.

But Iowa Park outscored Mineral Wells 13-4 in the third period to knot the game at 25 apiece going into the fourth period. The Lady Rams could again muster just 4 points to 6 for the Lady Hawks. Mineral Wells reportedly held a lead with 15 seconds left before Iowa Park (3-1) was able to put the game in their win column.

Aniya Richardson had the Lady Rams’ other three-pointer. Scoring single baskets were Jaylee Newman, Addyson Moore, Rindy Carter and Emery Boswell. Caitlyn Colwell scored the Lady Rams’ lone free throw as Mineral Wells attempted just five free shots in the game.

Boswell, a sophomore post, had a season and varsity career high nine rebounds, six of those cleaned off the Iowa Park glass. Mineral Wells totaled 25 rebounds, nine offensive and 16 defensive boards.

Mineral Wells went 11-of-26 from inside the arc and just 2-of-12 from beyond. The ladies recorded 10 steals, but committed 15 turnovers. Improved shooting and reducing turnovers are areas head coach Michael Ball and the team will continue working on as the season unfolds.

Mineral Wells returns to action Tuesday hosting Hillsboro at MWHS gym with tipoff set for 1:30 p.m.
