Lady Rams off to hot start at Windthorst Tournament

WINDTHORST – The Mineral Wells Lady Rams lost by 12 to Windthorst on Dec. 19 on the Lady Trojans’ floor. The Lady Rams returned nine days later and turned that loss around, defeating the Lady Trojans by nine, 51-42, to open the Windthorst Tournament.

Mineral Wells came back later in the day Thursday to soundly beat Chico, 63-10, in their most complete game of the season, registering season bests in points scored and allowed.

The two wins pushed the Lady Rams season record to 12-9.

The Colwell twins led the Windthorst win. Caitlyn Colwell dropped in 14 points, followed by 11 from Cadence Colwell. Rindy Carter got in on the double-digit scoring with 10 points of her own.

The twins had nearly identical scoring lines. Both were 3-of-3 shooting behind the arc. Caitlyn added two field goals and Cadence had one. Neither player missed a shot from the floor. Caitlyn also made a free throw.

Carter was 4-of-5 from the floor and added two made free throws.

Mineral Wells carried a 25-13 lead into halftime. Windthorst outscored the Lady Rams 18-12 in the third, but Mineral Wells put up 14 in the final stanza to breeze to the nine-point victory.

Aniya Richardson produced six points. Kahlea Samples added five, with Emery Boswell and Hailey McWhorter providing three and two points, respectively.

The Lady Rams were just getting started. The Chico Lady Dragons were overwhelmed by Mineral Wells in the afternoon pairing, as sophomore post Emery Boswell had her best game of the season with 11 points, joined by Richardson’s 11 points. Samples also reached double figures with 10.

McWhorter and Cadence Colwell had seven points apiece. Carter added six, with Caitlyn Colwell scoring 5. Dasia Clardy chipped in four points.

Mineral Wells was scorching hot early, canning 23 points in the opening frame while allowing Chico just two points in the first, second and fourth quarters and four points in the third. Mineral Wells led 36-4 at the half, then added 17 more in the third to run away with the win.

Sporting an identical 11-9 record, Jacksboro will take on the Lady Rams at 10:30 a.m. Friday. Mineral Wells will turn around and play Vernon (11-11) at 3 p.m.
