Ron Davis turned in more than 500 signatures on a recall petition for Ward 2 Councilman Carlos Maldonado to City Clerk Sharon McFadden which was certified this week at a Special Meeting of the Council. Davis has taken his interest in politics one step further and has filed to run for Mayor.

He filed with the City Clerk on February 14th his intent to challenge incumbent Mayor Regan Johnson in the May 4th election.

Also, the City website shows that Brian Sleeman filed the same day to run for the Ward 1 place on the Council. That seat is currently held by Jerrell Tomlin who was the first councilperson certified in recall petition drive initiated by a group of citizens unhappy with the City’s recent water rate hikes.

Tomlin’s term will end in May but he has also filed to run again to keep his seat, so when voters go to the polls in May, Tomlin’s name will appear twice on the ballot. Once for recall and once for election of the Ward 1 Council seat.

Also Councilman Doyle Light who represents Ward 4 will be on the ballot for recall as well as Carlos Maldonado of Ward 2.

This week Maldonado said he would “let the voters speak.”

“The recall petition is only 25%. That still leaves 75% that gets a vote,” said Maldonado.

Councilwoman Beth Watson of Ward 3 will rerun for her seat and is currently unopposed. The deadline to file is February 16th.
