LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Vote Against the Recall of Councilman Doyle Light

Dear Editor,
As a Mineral Wells City Council Member, I have sat next to Councilman Doyle Light for hundreds of hours over six years doing city business. Doyle has been selected Mayor Pro Tem of Mineral Wells by the council several times. That means that we trust him as the best choice to act as the mayor if the mayor is not available, or if a tragedy were to strike her.
Doyle often represents the city on behalf of the mayor. It is extremely valuable to have him as an extra voice to give dignity and professionalism when businesses and individuals are honored throughout town.
Councilman Light is on the ballot this year to be recalled, meaning he would be removed from office a year early. For those of you who can vote on this, in Ward 4, I highly encourage you to VOTE AGAINST THE RECALL.
As someone who didn’t know him before but who has sat beside him for hundreds of hours doing city business, here are my reasons I suggest you VOTE AGAINST THE RECALL OF DOYLE LIGHT:
● He has been selected by his PEERS as the mayor pro tem, an honor and responsibility.
● He speaks up about his ward’s needs.
● He watches projects closely, including street work.
● He is extremely well prepared at every meeting.
● He treats his council duty as a serious job.
● He is a retired public safety employee. Public safety is about half of our general fund budget and it is helpful to have someone understand those issues first hand.
If Ward 4 voters were to remove Mr. Light from office, he would be replaced by an unknown council, in an unknown process, by an unknown person. The council has the authority to appoint replacements, so I can’t promise that you, the voters, would have a choice.
VOTE AGAINST THE RECALL!
Ward 4 of Mineral Wells now is represented by the Mayor Pro Tem of Mineral Wells, who does a great job. Don’t replace him with a faceless, possibly unelected, person.
Beth Watson
Mineral Wells Council Woman
Ward 3
