Nicholas Rodriquez on Friday captured first-place area gold with a personal best performance in the 100-meter dash.

He will join seven other Rams and Lady Rams in Lubbock next weekend to compete in the Class 4A-Region I track and field meet, leaving them one step away from a trip to the state meet in Austin.

Members of the MWHS varsity track and field teams took part in Friday’s 4A-Regions 5/6 area track meet at the Abilene ISD Annex. First- through fourth-place finishers from the 11 participating schools advanced to regional competition.

Rodriquez raced to a personal-best time of 10.78 seconds in the 100-meter event. He narrowly missed double-gold, finishing second in the 200m dash with a time of 21.67 – another personal best for the Rams sprinter. He will compete in both events in Lubbock.

Mineral Wells had two other silver-medalists on Friday. Aniya Richardson took second place in the girls long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 7.75 inches.

Richardson will have another busy day in Lubbock as she also qualified to compete in three other events. She took third-place in the 400-meter run (1:02.44); fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.70 seconds); and fourth in the triple jump (33 feet, 9.5 inches).

Two other Lady Rams qualified for the regional meet. Iana Echanique took third-place honors in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 48.53 seconds. Kahlea Samples brought home third place in the triple jump with her 33 feet, 11 inches effort.

Another silver-medal performance was turned in by boys discus thrower Javawn McKinney, who recorded a personal-record toss of 21.67 feet.

Two other Rams qualified for regional competition. Gabriel Borjon finished fourth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:49.48. Frederico Villa’s 53.28-second time in the 400-meters was also good for a qualifying fourth place.

By the narrowest of margins, Gavriel Rodriquez just missed qualifying for regionals in the 3200-meter run, finishing in fifth with his 10:49.49 time, right on Borjon’s heels.
