Rams face SA Lake View in baseball playoffs’ first round

The regular season ended on a down note for the Mineral Wells Rams nine. But the second season begins Friday and Mineral Wells hopes to make a playoff run.
The Rams lost their last two regular-season games last week to Stephenville. But the team had already qualified for the post-season, which gets underway Friday night in Clyde with Mineral Wells taking on San Angelo Lake View in the Class 4A-Region I bi-district round.
The winner of the best-of-three series will advance to play the winner of the Krum and Gainesville first-round series.
Friday’s first game has a 7 p.m. first-pitch start time at Hanner Sports Complex, 500 Hays Road, in Clyde. Game two will shift to Abilene Cooper High School on Saturday at 1 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will follow the second game (game times are weather permitting.)
Lake View went 5-2 in District 5-4A, finishing in second place one game behind Snyder. The Chiefs sport a 14-11-1 overall record. They ended their regular season with three straight district wins over Sweetwater (3-0), Estacado (11-8) and Big Spring (6-5).
The Chiefs hit .270 as a team with an on-base percentage of .398. They are led offensively by catcher Isaac Monreal. He has 20 hits in 47 plate appearances (.426) and an OBP of .557.
Wyatt Henry (2.91 ERA) is the workhorse on the mound for San Angelo. The right-hander has thrown 55.1 innings in 11 games he pitched, including a team-high nine starts. He has given up 51 hits and 33 runs (23 earned). He has 47 strikeouts while issuing 22 walks.
Mineral Wells (7-15-1) finished third in District 6-4A. As a team, the Rams hit at a .248 clip with a .334 OBP. The Rams have two hitting over .300 on the year. Adrian Holifield has a .366 average in 71 plate appearances (26 hits) while Ridge Newton is swinging a .308 bat (16-for-52).
Braeden Wells and Ben Bullock give the Rams their one-two punch from the mound. Wells (2-5) has started 11 games with a 4.13 ERA. He has allowed 36 earned runs and has 61 strikeouts with 36 walks.
Bullock is 2-1 on the year with seven starts and a terrific 0.756 ERA, having allowed just four earned runs in 42.1 innings. He has 45 strikeouts while giving up 15 bases on balls. He has allowed 35 hits on the season.
