SAGINAW – Jaylee Newman’s three-point shot at the buzzer was off the mark, leaving Mineral Wells on the short end of a 38-35 decision Tuesday against the Class 5A-1 Saginaw Lady Rough Riders.
It was the second-straight loss for the Class 4A-2 Lady Rams, dropping their record to 8-4 on the season.
Turnovers and free-throw shooting doomed the local ladies. Mineral Wells turned it over 23 times and shot just 11-of-22 from the charity stripe, that for a team that has been hitting free throws at a 75 percent clip.
Saginaw (10-6) led by seven points with about one minute left in the game when Mineral Wells went into a press and pulled within 36-35, boosted by three Aniya Richardson steals. With 30 seconds left, Saginaw nailed a basket before Newman fired her last-second effort.
Richardson led the Lady Rams with 15 points on a 5-of-8 shooting night from the field. Addyson Moore and Kahlea Samples had seven points apiece. Newman added four and Emery Boswell chipped in a basket.
Boswell was big on the boards, pulling down 11 defensive rebounds. Moore also cleared 11 rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Mineral Wells will take a week off before facing Lorena (5-3) next Tuesday to conclude a three-game road trip.
