Gordon claims district wins over Strawn

The Mineral Wells Lady Rams on Saturday became the latest in a lengthening list of teams unable to control Glen Rose.

Currently ranked third in Class 4A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, the Lady Tigers eased past visiting Mineral Wells, 71-34.

With the win, Glen Rose improved to 25-2 on the year and 3-0 in District 6-4A. The Lady Rams saw their record dip to 15-10, 0-3 with their third-straight loss.

Junior Jaylee Newman led the Lady Rams’ effort with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the floor and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. She had two assists and two steals with a blocked shot and five rebounds.

Aniya Richardson provided eight points as the sophomore knocked down two three balls and a field goal. Senior Kahlea Samples added six points on two made deep shots. Maci Ruelas also connected on a three-pointer while Addyson Moore and Emery Boswell logged two points each.

Mineral Wells had another rough night offensively, making five of 17 shots from inside the arc while going 6-of-14 beyond. Just two Lady Rams made it to the free-throw line to attempt seven total shots, knocking down six.

Glen Rose’s defense clamped down on Mineral Wells, contributing to the Lady Rams’ stat sheet that included committing 20 turnovers.

Mineral Wells’ next outing is Tuesday when they host Stephenville in a scheduled 5:40 p.m. tilt. The Honeybees are 13-13, 2-1 after posting a 43-31 win over Brownwood.

Glen Rose and Brock (18-6) will tangle Tuesday in a key district battle with both teams sporting 3-0 district ledgers.

Rams drop district opener

The Mineral Wells Rams fared no better in their District 6-4A opener, losing 79-34 to Glen Rose.

It was the third straight loss for the Rams, a stretch in which they have been outscored 251-104. Mineral Wells’ season record is now 4-19. With the win Glen Rose improved to 18-6 overall.

The Rams host Stephenville in a scheduled 7 p.m. tilt Tuesday. The Yellowjackets are 18-5 after winning their district opener, 62-35, over Brownwood.

Gordon, Strawn teams clash

The Gordon Longhorns opened District 13-1A play with a strong 91-36 win over inter-county rival Strawn.

Currently ranked No. 3 in the state TABC Class 1A rankings, the ‘Horns improved to 6-3 with their first five wins coming against Class 4A schools.

Gordon hosts Baird on Tuesday with a scheduled 7:45 p.m. start.

The Lady Longhorns improved their district mark to 2-1 with a 61-48 win over Strawn. The Gordon ladies won their first district contest by forfeit over Moran before falling to Eula.

Baird visits Gordon on Tuesday with first tip set for 6:30 p.m.
