Longhorns scoring by the thousands; area hoops teams gear up for UIL playoffs

Two Gordon ISD players have topped the 1,000 career points-scored plateau and another now has over 1,500 career points as their boys and girls basketball squads join other area teams in preparing for the post-season.

Longhorns juniors Stryker Reed and Aiden Shank both eclipsed the 1K points-scored milestones in the past couple of weeks.

Lady Longhorns senior Ava Hawkins closed out January by surpassing 1,500^th career points scored while topping 660 career rebounds. Hawkins recorded a single-game career high of 29 points against Strawn in their Jan. 10 contest.

Those three ‘Horns and their respective teams have more basketball to play.

The Lady Longhorns closed out their regular season in a Hawkins-led 79-7 rout of Ranger. The win lifted their season mark to 22-11 and 7-2 in District 13-1A. Gordon claimed district runners-up honors, finishing second to district champ Eula, ranked No. 4 in Class 1A by the Texas Association Basketball Coaches Association with a 31-2 overall, 8-0 district record.

Gordon will face the Highland Hornets in the opening bi-district playoffs round at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Clyde High School. The winner will play the winner of the Aspermont and Crowell game taking place Monday in Stamford.

Hoping to close out their District 13 campaign with a perfect mark, the Gordon boys have one regular season game remaining against Eula. The ‘Horns are currently 18-3 on the season and 9-0 in district. They are are ranked third in Class 1A. Eula is right behind Gordon in second place with an 8-1 district mark, their only loss coming to Gordon in a 65-8 blowout on the Pirates’ home court.

The ‘Horns are looking to make another deep playoff run after last season’s trip to Austin to play in the state tournament, falling in the semi-final round.

STRAWN

The Strawn Lady Greyhounds will open their post-season hopes on Tuesday, squaring off against Ira in Trent with a scheduled 6 p.m. tipoff.

The Lady ‘Hounds finished the regular season 16-11 overall and 4-4 in District 13-1A. They will be coming off a regular season-ending victory over Woodson, 53-49, to finish fourth. The Ira Lady Bulldogs are 18-13 overall after going 3-5 in District 14-1A, finishing third.

The Strawn boys (7-11, 4-4) conclude their regular-season slate Tuesday visiting the Baird Bears (4-5, 9-10).

GRAFORD

The Lady Jackrabbits wrapped up an 8-4 District 11-2A campaign, their first one playing in Class 2A after moving up a level this season. Graford (12-17) ended their regular season with a 44-36 win over Santo to claim fourth-place in district.

The Graford ladies will open the post-season facing Crawford (14-6, 8-2) on Monday at Stephenville High School. Game time for the bi-district meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. The Lady Pirates finished second in District 12-2A behind Bosqueville.

TABC has the Jackrabbits boys currently ranked eighth in Class 2A, also marking their first season playing up a level. Graford has a regular-season finale on Tuesday hosting Hamilton.

SANTO

The Lady Wildcats concluded their season on the hardwood Tuesday, losing 44-36 to Graford. It was the Lady Wildcats’ fourth straight loss. They finish the season with a 9-16 record and a 4-8 mark in District 11-2A, good for fifth place.

The Wildcats boys have their regular-season finale on Tuesday hosting Poolville.
