Petrie collects two RBIs, Hollifield gets win in relief

By DAVID MAY | Special to Mineral Wells Area News

Mineral Wells came from three runs down to post a 4-3 win Friday night in Stephenville, completing this week’s two-game sweep of the ‘Jackets.

The Rams remain atop the District 6-4A standings with a 4-0 mark after beating Glen Rose twice last week.

Left fielder Josh Petrie had two RBIs with a key walk to help key the late-game comeback. His sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh plated the go-ahead and eventual winning run.

William Hollifield turned in a strong relief performance on the mound, hurling 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts while allowing two runs and two walks on 112 pitches. He got the win, with Newt Schroeder recording a save as the Rams ended the game picking off a runner at second.

Rams starter Hayes Hering had a good start to his brief outing. He fanned the first two Yellowjackets he saw before running into trouble, loading the bases on three straight walks. A passed ball scored a run. Hering escaped further damage with his third strikeout of the inning. It would be his only inning of work, giving way to Hollifield after throwing 37 pitches.

A third-inning double and a Rams error gave Stephenville a 3-0 lead.

Mineral Wells tied the game at three runs apiece in the top of the fifth. Owen Gadd and Devin Russell had consecutive one-out singles. Hollifield drew a walk to load the bases. Holden Hering was then hit by a pitch, scoring Gadd. Petrie followed with another walk that brought Russell home. Mineral Wells created the third run of the running on the bases to make it a 3-3 affair.

Hollifield led of the top of the seventh with a walk. He stole second and then third, paving the way for Petrie’s sacrifice fly to put the Rams on top to stay.

Weather and field conditions permitting, Mineral Wells (12-7-1) has a Saturday home game scheduled against Lake Worth.
