YMCA Camp Grady Spruce has reached a major milestone in its $10.2 million capital renovation campaign, unveiling a series of new and upgraded facilities during a ribbon-cutting celebration held this week.
Members of the camp community and generous donors gathered to mark the occasion and tour the newly renovated Ray Bean Dining Hall and Ray Bean Cabins—spaces described as “a beautiful upgrade to places that mean so much to so many.”

Expanded Capacity and Upgraded Facilities
Originally a summer-only camp, Camp Grady Spruce is now a year-round destination serving nearly 18,000 people annually.

The latest renovations include a fully renovated Ray Bean Dining Hall, eight new cabins, expanding capacity from 140 to 256, a secure welcome center for check-in and access control (now under construction), a newly improved equestrian facility with a covered arena, restrooms, and hitching post, as well as upgrades to the aquatics area, enhancing outdoor activity options for campers.
More Than a Camp Experience
YMCA leadership emphasized the camp’s growing role in helping children form real-world connections—especially at a time when youth face rising social isolation.

“My first position at the YMCA was a camp counselor, so I have a deep appreciation and connection to the positive impacts of camp,” said Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas.
“At Camp Grady, friendships form without filters and kids can learn life-long values. The upgrades we’ve made improve their experience and ensure future campers are set for success. This is only the beginning.”
A Response to a Rising Need
According to the U.S. Surgeon General, declining face-to-face interaction is contributing to increases in anxiety and depression. The American Psychological Association notes that youth are especially vulnerable due to their ongoing development.
Camp Grady Spruce is leaning into its role as a solution.
“We’re excited to see the faces of campers who now can enjoy these new spaces,” said Cassandra Marlatt, Executive Director of Camp Grady Spruce.
“These renovations will bolster our ability to continue to foster meaningful relationships, and create a welcoming and enriching environment.”
Only Halfway There — Help Finish the Vision
Though the upgrades mark a major milestone, the capital project is only halfway complete.
“Camp has shaped lives for 76 years—and these new spaces will help us impact even more kids and families in the years to come,” the organization shared.

“We need your help to get this project across the finish line—and every gift brings us closer to transforming camp for future generations.”
