MINERAL WELLS, Texas — Mineral Wells High School’s Holden Hering has been named one of just nine players nationwide to receive the 2024 ABCA/Rawlings High School Gold Glove Award, recognizing the top defensive high school baseball players in the country. Hering was the only recipient from Texas and the only pitcher selected this year.

Presented by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Rawlings Sporting Goods, the Gold Glove Award honors one elite defender at each position across all levels of high school baseball.

“This year was a special one for Mineral Wells Baseball, and a big reason for that was Holden,” said Rams Head Coach Jacob Clay.

“His leadership and pride in our program have meant so much. I tell people all the time — he’s the easiest five-star player you’ll ever coach. He leads by example, and his drive to be great is something you notice right away. Speaking for myself and the rest of our staff, we feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach a player like Holden Hering.”

In addition to his defensive excellence, Hering helped lead the Mineral Wells Rams to the UIL Class 4A Regional Semifinals this spring — the program’s deepest playoff run in more than six decades.

Mineral Wells Athletic Director Cody Worrell called the national recognition “a tremendous honor” and praised Hering’s work ethic and leadership. “To be recognized among the best defenders in the nation — and as a pitcher — says everything about how hard he’s worked.”

Hering has committed to continue his baseball career at Texas Tech University in the fall.

Hering’s selection places him among the top defenders in the nation and marks a proud moment for the Mineral Wells baseball program.
