Lake Mineral Wells State Park opens new Red Trail Loop
Lake Mineral Wells State Park has opened a new Red Trail Loop, marking the first new trail established at the park in more than a decade.

The new section extends the existing Red Trail and gives visitors a safer, more convenient way to explore the southeast side of the park. Beginning at the main Penitentiary Hollow trailhead, the loop passes rock formations and offers new views of the Cross Timbers landscape.
Park officials said the addition of the Upper Red Trail allows hikers to complete a full loop without having to retrace their steps on the Lower Red Trail or walk along the roadway to return to the parking area.
“The new Upper Red Trail is the first new trail established at Lake Mineral Wells State Park in over 10 years,” Nikki Nuttall said in a news release. “This portion of the trail allows visitors to complete a loop and return to their parking area without having to walk along the roadway.”
The project was developed over several years in response to visitor feedback and safety concerns, with support from park staff, volunteers and the Lake Mineral Wells State Park Friends Group.
“The addition to the Red Trail gives hikers more time in nature as they explore the southeast side of the lake, while also providing a safer route between Penitentiary Hollow and the southern parking lot,” Rhett Warren said.
One of the trail’s most notable features is a hand-built rock bridge made with natural materials found on-site.
“It’s really cool how we were able to use materials provided by nature to build a bridge that blends in with the surroundings,” Warren said.
Nuttall said the elevated portion of the trail also offers visitors a different view of the landscape.
“I’m excited for visitors to experience a different viewpoint of the ancient Cross Timbers region from a slightly higher elevation,” she said.
To celebrate the opening, the park will offer guided hikes of the Red Trail Loop at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 4, and 10 a.m. Saturday, April 11. Each hike is limited to 20 participants and will be led by park hosts who helped build the trail.
“There’s something different about walking a trail you helped shape,” Rose Jordan said. “We’re excited to walk it with visitors and help them notice the details that make this area so special.”
Reservations are required for the guided hikes. To reserve a spot, call 940-328-1171, ext. 222. Participants are encouraged to wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water.
The Red Trail Loop is open daily during park hours. Admission is included with a Texas State Parks Pass or daily park entrance fee.
