The Gordon Longhorns once again had the start of their basketball season delayed after most team members were busy winning their second straight state sixman football title.
Now playing with a round orange ball, last year’s Class 1A state semifinalists are back at it and making up for lost time.
The ‘Horns upset the Class 4A Stephenville Yellowjackets on Thursday, 68-44, for their fourth win in six outings. The win snapped the ‘Jackets four-game win streak and dropped their season record 16-5.
The big win came on the heels of a near-upset of nearby rival Lipan, ranked No. 2 in the current Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 2A poll. The Indians escaped with a 54-53 victory. Lipan improved to 12-5, with the win ending a three-game losing streak.

Gordon faces another big test on Saturday, Jan. 4. The team travels to Lubbock to take on another Class 4A team, the Liberty Patriots. Liberty enters the noon contest sporting a 16-3 record. While ignored in the TABC poll, MaxPreps has Liberty ranked fifth in Class 4A.
The Lady ‘Horns received a District 13-1A-opening win when Moran forfeited their scheduled Friday game. Gordon next faces Eula (24-1), ranked No. 3 in the state. The Lady Pirates have not lost since the opening game of the season. Game time in Gordon is set for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
