Joan Louise McDonald, 78, passed away on August 22, 2026, in Mineral Wells, Texas. She was born on December 2, 1947, in Winters, Texas, and grew up on a West Texas farm, where she learned the value of hard work, faith, family, and caring for others.

Joan earned a degree in Elementary Education from San Angelo State University and devoted 30 years to teaching second grade. Her passion for helping children continued throughout her career as she worked as both a reading specialist and a dyslexia specialist. She had a special gift for recognizing the potential in every child and patiently helping them discover what they could accomplish.
Joan served the Mineral Wells community for more than 50 years. Her faith and her desire to serve others were an important part of her life. She lovingly served through her church and devoted her time to Backpack Buddies, helping provide support and care to children in the community. Joan had a natural instinct for nurturing; whether it was a child, a garden, a friendship, or something she was creating with her own hands. She loved gardening and found joy in planting, tending, and watching things grow. She brought that same patience and tenderness to the people she loved. As a young girl, Joan was taught to sew by her skilled mother, and she developed a lifelong love of quilting. Her quilts became an expression of her love and generosity. Many babies born into her family and throughout the Mineral Wells community were wrapped in a snuggly quilt lovingly made by Joan. Each one carried not only warmth, but a piece of her heart. Above all, Joan treasured her family and friends and the precious memories they made together. She was a warm, caring, and loving woman whose presence brought comfort and joy to those around her. Her kindness, faith, creativity, and willingness to serve left an enduring mark on countless lives.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Willhelm and Christine Ahrens.
She is survived by her two daughters, Angela Matthews and Laci McDonald; her grandchildren, Aria Jaramillo, Shawn McDonald and his wife Andrea; and her great-grandchildren, Reece and Mason. She is also lovingly remembered by her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ted and Mary Beth Ahrens and Roger and Elaine Ahrens; as well as her special friend, David Prince; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Joan leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, service, creativity, and nurturing. Her life was a beautiful example of what can happen when we take the time to care for others, plant seeds of kindness, and patiently watch them grow.
