MINERAL WELLS, Texas — Hundreds of residents gathered Tuesday evening, Oct. 6, at Mineral Wells High School for the city’s fourth annual National Night Out, an event designed to strengthen relationships between the community, law enforcement and first responders.

Sponsored by the City of Mineral Wells, the event brought together approximately 65 vendors, area law enforcement agencies and other emergency responders for an evening of free food, games and family-friendly activities.

For Mineral Wells Police Chief Tim Denison, the event provides an opportunity for officers and residents to connect outside of emergency situations.

“It gets the community and the police together in a relaxed environment and allows us to interact with the kids and just have fun,” Denison said.

Denison emphasized that events like National Night Out allow residents to see the human side of police officers while helping build positive, lasting relationships between the department and the community.

For local families, the evening also offered children an opportunity to explore emergency vehicles and meet the people who operate them.

Walter Choate, a lifelong Mineral Wells resident and local business owner, attended with his two children. He explained that his children had previously seen emergency vehicles responding to incidents, particularly during the recent Ross Fire, and had questions about their presence in the city.

“This gives them an opportunity to go over and check all of that stuff out, the police vehicles, the fire trucks, and even the boom trucks,” Choate said.

National Night Out was established in 1984 and is organized nationally by the National Association of Town Watch. The annual campaign encourages partnerships between law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve through neighborhood gatherings, public safety demonstrations and family activities.

According to the organization, millions of Americans participate in National Night Out events each year.

Mineral Wells’ annual celebration continues that tradition by bringing residents and first responders together in an informal setting, creating opportunities for conversations, connections and stronger community relationships.
